Traditional Coaching: Clients will meet with their coach for an initial session and then bi-weekly for the next four weeks, for a total of 4-5 sessions. Sessions will be scheduled directly with the coach, and there is some flexibility to accommodate skipping a week or moving a session if needed. Sessions will be 30 minutes long and take place in person at 202 Norwood.
Drop-In Coaching: We will also offer drop-in hours for students to learn more about what coaching has to offer, talk through making a decision, set up a daily schedule, or discuss other short-term goals. Drop-in coaching allows you to see what coaching is like as you look at situations from all angles and get a different perspective without a longer-term commitment. You can move to traditional coaching after a drop-in session, but it is not required.
To schedule your initial well-being coaching session, email wellbeing@mst.edu, with the subject "Well-Being Coaching Initial Session Interest". You will then be contacted by a Student Well-Being staff member to set up a time. After your first session, the staff member you meet with will schedule your follow up session(s) directly with you.
It is sometimes difficult to tell the difference between counseling and coaching. In both cases, you will be empowered and enabled to move forward more positively. Instead of giving advice and telling you what to do, both services ask for your input and perspective.
It comes down to where your focus needs to be to thrive - either on healing or growing- so you can maximize your potential. If you are experiencing wounds, pains, or hurts that ache whenever you are poked, or if they are invasive enough to interfere with your daily functioning, then counseling might be the right solution. In many cases, counseling leads to coaching as the person heals mentally and emotionally. Coaching might be a more appropriate starting point if you want to set goals or change your lifestyle to build healthier life habits.
